Ibis Technologies, Inc.
Positive identification at standoff distances.
About
Ibis Technologies is developing a next-generation detection system that positively identifies targeted materials at significant standoff distances - from inches to miles, depending on configuration. Unlike radar, X-ray, or seismic systems that detect density or mass, Ibis technology identifies the specific substance. Not just that something is there, but what it is.
The Problem
No detection technology today can make a positive identification of a target substance without direct sampling. Airport swab tests, customs inspections, and field detection all require either physical contact with the material or proximity that creates risk. The gap between “something is here” and “this specific substance is here” costs time, creates exposure, and limits what is possible in the field.
The Technology
Ibis uses a form of spectroscopy that excites target materials electromagnetically and detects their unique response signatures. The frequencies for each substance are mathematically derived from known energy states - the same physics that governs how atoms behave. The system detects solids, liquids, and gases; can be configured for trace or bulk quantities; and operates across detection windows from close range to more than a mile.
The technology has been validated across 250+ real-world sites in three countries, including commercial deployments in oil exploration (212 wells, 100% accuracy for oil presence/absence), mineral exploration (20 of 21 blind targets intercepted and confirmed with assay), and explosives detection. Blind reliability testing across antimony, silver, and propane shows 74-84% success rates. Total commercial revenues to date exceed $3.6M.
Applications
Security and Defense - Non-intrusive detection of explosives, narcotics, and contraband at ports, airports, border crossings, and checkpoints. Standoff detection from vehicles, vessels, and UAVs without requiring a secondary sampling step.
Natural Resource Exploration - Verification of oil, gas, and mineral deposits prior to drilling. Survey work that eliminates dry holes and reduces exploration costs. Proven across hydrocarbons, precious metals, rare earth elements, lithium, and cobalt.
Future Verticals - Healthcare analysis, space exploration (lunar and Martian rover applications), and fully automated unmanned operation are on the product roadmap following prototyping completion.
Where We Are
The technology is at TRL4 - component and subsystem validation in a laboratory environment. Ibis is currently raising to fund the engineering and automation work required for commercial deployment, with established relationships in place with defense prime contractors across homeland security, border security, and space exploration divisions.
